Information about the artist:
Joseph Beuys was born in Krefeld in 1921, he died in Düsseldorf in 1986. Pioneer of contemporary art movements. Sculptor, draftsman, painter, action artist, art theorist. Childhood and the 2nd World War had a lasting impact on his creative reflection. One of the most important artists of the 2nd half of this century. 1941-1945 soldier, 1947-1952 studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, among others with Ewald Mataré, from 1961-1972 professor there. 1963-1974 Actions in connection with the Fluxus movement. Beuys ritualizes movement sequences interspersed with autobiographical, mythical or historically charged themes or objects (Manresa 1966; Haupstrom-Fluxus, Eurasienstab, 1967). Represented at every Documenta from 1964-1986 (including Honey Pump at Work in 1977). With his materials felt, copper, fat, wax, Beuys points to energies and textures of matter: storing and flowing, heat and cold influence, insulating and exuding, form and chaos. He creates drawings, sculptural images, spatial installations, multiples and writings, and graphic cycles. His artistic motivation in the sense of the expanded concept of art blurs the line between everyday life and art object. In this way he also transfers the concept of sculpture to the human being up to his social organism. In 1973 Beuys founds the Free International University for Creativity and International Research FIU. Beuys influences politics and ecology through the journalistic media. Today there are 4000 works by Joseph Beuys in the van der Grinten Collection at Schloss Moyland, furthermore a block of Beuys in the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, the Secret Block, 1945-1976, Collection. Marx, Berlin,; the 7000 Oaks, 1982-1987, in Kassel; Zeige deine Wunde, 1976, in the Städtische Galerie Munich. This biography is subject to copyright. (c) Evi Kliemand, 1998. All rights reserved.
